Last month we told you about our inspiring client, Josip Markus, who put his house up for sale in Oakland in Upper Rockridge and promised to donate $ 100,000 to a foundation dedicated to helping indigenous communities in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest.
Well, Josip's story not only attracted media attention from NBC Bay Area News, the East Bay Times and The Montclarion, but also raised even more money for his chosen charity, the SOFIE Foundation.
Josip's four-bedroom house at 5507 Harbord Drive, which was listed at $ 1,095 million on May 23, quickly attracted 14 competitive offers and sold for $ 1,625 million.
Abio's listing agent and co-founder, Linnette Edwards, was so inspired by Josip's generosity that he decided to donate 20% of his commission to the SOFIE Foundation. What's more exciting is that the buyer's agent, Brian McCarthy, promised to donate 10% of his commission. Together, that's almost $ 10,000!

One good action provokes another, and another ... Now Josip, who recently joined the SOFIE executive team in a volunteer role, tells us that the nonprofit organization received additional promises of at least $ 5,000 since its publication was published. history. And Josip donated $ 1,400 from the sale of possessions that he can't take to his next home.
Josip's story also inspired Linnette and Abio Properties to create a new charity called Abio Impact to work with like-minded home sellers and donate to their causes.

Josip, a life coach and former business executive in the exoskeleton industry (portable robotics), will move to Ohio to help his father, who has been fighting Parkinson for 13 years.
When Josip put his house on the market, he knew that he wanted to make this move more than a real estate transaction. He is not a rich man by the standards of the Bay Area and giving up some of the proceeds from the sale would hurt him a little. But, as he told NBC reporter Garvin Thomas:

"I needed to make a statement for myself and for everyone that this (supporting indigenous communities) is really so important to me."
More than a real estate transaction
Brian, who represented the buyers, said his customers started with a smaller budget in mind, but this story moved them so much that they had to be part of it.
"In the end, they felt so connected to the cause that they decided to stretch their budget so they could start their family in a home with so much energy," Brian said.

Linnette, Josip's agent, said he has never had a client to announce this type of philanthropy.
"Josip openly asked me:" What would happen if we could make this sale of the house more than a simple commercial transaction? "And that was really very enlightening," Linnette told the East Bay Times. “(My reaction) was a combination of a surprise factor and a humiliating factor. In 17 years of doing business, I have never had a client that came to me and told me that I want to donate such a substantial amount for a cause he is so passionate about.
"And when he said that, he moved me and inspired me to say," I want to support you and what you're going through "and I would like to provide part of my commission to go to your cause," he continued.
